Hemingway napping/passed out, drink in hand with his son on his boat, The Pilar, fishing for marlin off the coast of Cuba. The tommy-gun was used, ineffectively, to fight off Mako sharks who would, as in The Old Man and The Sea, take huge chunks out of his hard-earned catch. Hemingway managed to tag a few Makos with his tommy-gun, but they bled out and all the activity simply attracted more Makos.
1. Have you ever seen an image of a man so clearly in his rightful place in the world such as this?
2. There is something about this pic that reminds me of my own father. Perhaps it is the fishing, the gun,
or the booze, but something is there—and it is something good.
